Pumped about the new Premier League? We're disgustingly excited about it.
To help get you in the mood for this weekend's big kick-off, we've lovingly compiled clips from the very finest opening weekend matches since footy began, in 1992. Enjoy.
2017/18 - Arsenal 4 v Leicester 3
A simply joyous game of footy. Whilst the delicious Vardy narrative (2 goals against the team he’d mugged off over the summer) was good, Giroud winning it late on by wrapping his entire face around a cross and powering in off the bar was truly box office.
2016/17 - Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool
Peak Wenger. Despite scoring three at home, Arsenal were ruthlessly torn to shreds by a Liverpool side taking shape under Klopp. An opening day backline featuring a 12-year-old being played out of position and a local postman didn’t help. Contains missed penalties, a worldy from Coutinho and a Mignolet howler. Duly prompted one of the all-time great Arsenal Fan TV episodes.
2008/9 - Everton 2-3 Blackburn
David Dunn channelling his inner Riquelme, Roque Santa Cruz being all fit and great, an extra time winner and a reminder that Mikel Arteta was fully boss once upon a time.
1997/8 - Coventry 3-2 Chelsea
Hands up who likes Dion Dublin hat-tricks? YOU’RE IN LUCK BOYO.
Cheeky bonuses - includes a glut of really quite village defending and some timeless tomfoolery from Frank Sinclair.
1996/7 -Middlesbrough 3-3 Liverpool
Boro’s Samba Boys vs Liverpool’s Spice Lads - a game that couldn't be more 90’s if developed a faux Manc accent and turned up carrying a Babylon 5 VHS boxset. Features a creamy Liverpool kit I’m still yet to come to terms with.
1994/5 Sheff Wed 3-4 Spurs
One of the all-time banter celebrations from Jurgen Klinsmann and really quite thunderous own goal. “SHIT, DID YOU SEE THAT?”
2009/10 - Everton 1-6 Arsenal: For a side that won f*ck all, this lot were sensational on their day.
2004/5 - Middlesbrough 2-2 Newcastle: Shola, Bolo, Bellamy and the boys. Lovely stuff.
2002/3 - Charlton 2-3 Chelsea: Carlton Cole, you beauty.
2001/2 - Man United 3-2 Fulham: Two for Ruud on debut and a Beckham bender for the ages.
1995/6 - Southampton 3-4 Nottingham Forrest: Le Tis hat-trick and one of the great 90’s away kits.
